Five Resolutions to Simplify Your Tech Life

Five Resolutions to Simplify Your Tech Life

This story was originally published on this site.

In 2017, why not try a new kind of New Year’s resolution? Instead of just hitting the gym and dropping some pounds, consider changing some personal habits to simplify the tech in your life.

If you are like most people, there are things you do with tech that could use some tweaking. Strengthening your password security, for one, would benefit you tremendously in an era when hacks are rampant. For another, purging the e-junk you have accumulated over the years would help the environment and your sanity. While you’re at it, start doing maintenance on your electronics to make sure they work smoothly this year.

Here are my top recommendations for resolutions to abide by to make tech less frustrating in  the new year.

Clean Up Your Password Hygiene

P.U. — what’s that smell? It’s your bad password hygiene. You are probably using the same password across multiple websites for banking, shopping, social media and email.

That’s understandable: A person can only memorize so many passwords. But in 2016, Yahoo reminded everybody that reusing passwords is a very bad idea, after it revealed that 500 million Yahoo accounts were compromised in 2014, in addition to 1 billion accounts that were hacked in 2013. If your Yahoo account password was the same as ones you used elsewhere, those accounts were vulnerable, too.

Start off 2017 by spending a few hours logging into each of your accounts and creating unique, strong passwords. To make this easier, use applications like LastPass or 1Password, which are password-managing apps that let you use one master password to unlock a vault of passwords to log in to all of your internet accounts. They also automatically generate strong passwords for you.

Then add an extra layer of protection by enabling two-factor verification on your accounts whenever the option is available. When you enter your password, you will receive a message (usually a text) with a one-time code that you must enter before logging in.

Taking these two simple steps will help safeguard you from the inevitable hacks that arise this year.

Maintain Your Devices

After regular use, our smartphones and computers start to feel sluggish and short-lived, but a bit of maintenance can make them feel brand new.

First, check the condition of your batteries. With iPhone and iPads, you can hook the devices up to a Mac and run the app coconutBattery, which reveals battery statistics. With Android devices, you can use the app Battery by MacroPinch.  If your battery is on its last legs, it’s time to order a new one or schedule an appointment at a repair shop to replace it.

If your devices feel sluggish, freeing up some storage can also make a dramatic difference. Start by purging apps you never use anymore. Then do something about those photos you never look at: back up all your photos to the cloud using services like Google Photos and then delete them from your device to start the new year with a fresh photo roll.

Show your gadgets some physical love, too.  Give your screens a good wipe with a wetted cloth. If you own a desktop computer, open it up and use compressed air to blow out the dust.

Do this basic maintenance every six months and your devices will run smoothly for many years.

Mind Your Infrastructure

We don’t hesitate to buy new smartphones every two years — but that neglected, ugly Wi-Fi router tucked away in the corner of the living room may be the most important tech product to upgrade every few years. Among all tech headaches, there is nothing more annoying than a sluggish, spotty internet connection.

Start off each new year by doing some checks on your internet infrastructure. If your router is more than three years old, you probably need a new one that is compatible with today’s faster, smarter wireless standards. If you are relying on a router provided by your broadband provider, you should probably buy a more powerful stand-alone router.

The Wirecutter, the product recommendations website owned by The New York Times, recommends TP-Link’s Archer C7 as the best router for most people. (If you have less technical know-how, I recommend the Wi-Fi system from Eero, which offers a smartphone app that holds your hand through the network setup.)

Be Less Wasteful

Unused gadgets and power cables take up lots of space in drawers and attics. This e-waste would be better off sold or donated to someone in need, or recycled for their precious metals.

During spring cleaning season, make plans to get this unwanted junk out of your life. Companies like Amazon and Gazelle offer headache-free trade-in services for selling used electronics. Just punch in the gadget you are trying to trade in, like a used iPhone or Samsung Galaxy device, and the sites offer a quote for how much money or Amazon store credit you can get in exchange for the gear. Then pack up the outdated hardware, slap on a shipping label, drop it off at a shipping center and wait for the money to roll in.

There is bound to be unsellable e-junk in your pile. Fortunately, all Best Buy locations will take your used electronics and recycle them for free. Just bag the items up and drop them off at the store’s customer-service counter, and the retailer will take care of the rest.

Be a Smarter Shopper

To get great deals on electronics, there is no need to wait until Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Carefully research high-quality, long-lasting items you want and buy them when their prices drop a significant amount. This technique can be used when online shopping for just about anything, but especially for tech products that decrease in price as they age.

Web tools like Camel Camel Camel and Keepa make price tracking on Amazon easy. On their websites, just do a search on the name of the item, and the sites will pull up a price history. From there, you can create a tracker to alert you via email whenever a price drops to a desired amount.

Many deals that emerge throughout the year are as good, or better than the ones on Black Friday. You just have to know how to spot them.

Another way to save money is to consider buying used products whenever possible. Be on the lookout for sales of used or refurbished electronics from reputable brands like Apple, GameStop, Amazon and Gazelle. Before you buy a used item, read about its condition carefully: Often, products sold as used were barely touched before they were returned by a customer, or they were restored to good-as-new condition by a refurbishing center.

vine

Twitter has announced on Wednesday that it is shutting down its short-form video sharing service – Vine, an app where users can share six-second-long looping video clips was founded in June 2012, and Twitter acquired it in October 2012, shortly before its official launch.

Twitter made this announcement via a statement:

Since 2013, millions of people have turned to Vine to laugh at loops and see creativity unfold. Today, we are sharing the news that in the coming months we’ll be discontinuing the mobile app.

Nothing is happening to the apps, website or your Vines today. We value you, your Vines, and are going to do this the right way. You’ll be able to access and download your Vines. We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website.

Thank you. Thank you. To all the creators out there — thank you for taking a chance on this app back in the day. To the many team members over the years who made this what it was — thank you for your contributions. And of course, thank you to all of those who came to watch and laugh every day.

What’s next? We’ll be working closely with creators to make sure your questions are answered and will work hard to do this the right way. We’ll be sharing more details on this blog and our Twitter account, and will notify you through the app when we start to change things.

Instagram

Instagram recently announced an update to its iOS app that will allow users pinch to zoom on photos or videos. This announcement was made on August 31 via Instagram.

The new feature will be available across the entire app and according to Instagram, pinch-to-zoom will work

The new feature will be available across the entire app and according to Instagram, pinch to zoom will work for the media that shows up in standard feed, as well as on people’s profiles and in the Explore tab.

The photo platform shared a video announcing the feature that offers a vague idea of what pinch-to-zoom will look like.

The new feature is not yet available on Android, but the developers have promised that this will be sorted out in a few weeks.

Zooming in on photos and videos is a feature that has been requested by users for many years now, so this is a welcome development.

Within the few hours of this new update, there have been mixed reactions from users. Some say the update is available in the App Store but the feature isn’t working yet.

The update is a handy way of making details clearer, but if overstretched, objects may look non-appealing.

As this development is still new, we wait to see how it will be accepted by the public.

Mark Zuckerberg To Meet With President Buhari And VP

Mark Zuckerberg

Like you already know; the founder of Facebook – Mark Zuckerberg yesterday – August 30, 2016, sneaked into Nigeria; Facebook’s largest African market with an average of about 16 million users.

According to reports; Mr. Zuckerberg will be meeting with either the President or Vice President Osinbajo or both; to share some developmental ideas that will benefit the country but the meeting hasn’t been confirmed.

Zuckerberg will be spending a few days in Nigeria and according to his post on Facebook, he has already met with some local developers and entrepreneurs. His post read – “This is my first trip to Sub-Saharan Africa. I’ll be meeting with developers and entrepreneurs, and learning about the startup ecosystem in Nigeria. The energy here is amazing and I’m excited to learn as much as I can…

Mark ZuckerbergMark visited a coding camp for kids in Yaba, Lagos. He also met with local start-up founders and developers at Co-creation Hub Nigeria (CcHub); a local innovation centre which over the years, has served as a start-up incubator and accelerator; housing successful start-ups such as BudgIT – a civic enterprise which focuses on accountability and transparency in government budgets.

Mark Zuckerberg In LagosMark Zuckerberg also visited Rosemary Njoku at the Facebook Express Wi-Fi stand she runs in Lagos and in a statement, he said “This week, we’re launching a satellite into space to enable more entrepreneurs across Africa to sell Express Wi-Fi and more people to access reliable internet. That means more connectivity and more opportunity for entrepreneurs like Rosemary everywhere.”

The seventh richest man in the world also gave kudos to Nigeria by acknowledging the work of start-ups like BudgIT and job listing service platform like Jobberman over the past year.

9 Fashion Apps To Vamp Up Your Style

Written by HF Magazine Staff  |

Fashion Apps

We have 9 fashion apps that should interest all the fashionistas out there. We’ll all agree that the world is getting “techier” and “trendier” by the day, and different developers are coming up with mobile applications to make life easier.

Already, you know there are apps for fitness, weight loss, health, communication, music, photography, education, shopping and the likes. The fashion industry will not be left behind.

Here are 9 fashion apps you should go for today…

ASAP54

ASAP54 is probably the most popular fashion apps at the moment. Ever seen clothing item on a stranger and do not have the nerve to ask them where they got it?

Just stylishly take a picture of it. The ASAP54 will let you know where you can buy such an item or an item really similar to it. The same thing applies to random pictures you see on the internet.

This app uses image recognition technology and pulls items from over 150 retailers.

Just upload a photo of something you like, and surf ASAP54’s database of over 700,000 pieces. If you can’t find the item, the app offers in-house stylists to assist customers further in their search.

It also promises a 24-hour turnaround.

ASAP54 includes a “follow” element, where you can get a glimpse at other people’s styles and buy what’s on their lists.

The London-based company is currently available to iPhone users only, but they plan to release an Android version later on.

Style Eyes

Style Eyes app is also similar to the ASAP45, using a photo to find the desired item or a similar item, which can be purchased from its catalog of retailers. This app is available to iPhone and Android users.

Slyce

Slyce is an app where an image recognition technology integrates with retail brands so shoppers can find items by taking photos with their iPhones or scanning images from their desktops.

The technology recognizes information such as how far apart buttons are, fabric, and stitching to help power visual searches.

Pounce

Pounce allows consumers to buy items directly from retail advertisements from stores. This app is available only on iOS.

Rent the Runway

For consumers more interested in renting than buying, iPhone app Rent the Runway uses a photo of an item seen in a store to find something similar that customers can rent instead.

LIKEtoKNOW

LIKEtoKNOW is an app that allows you to tell your social media followers where they can get what you are wearing.

Stylists on Instagram can show outfits on LIKEtoKNOW, where fans can buy similar clothes, accessories, and shoes.

On sign up, LIKEtoKNOW syncs its service with your Instagram account, allowing you to start accessing information instantly.

If the users “like” an Instagram picture of a celebrity or fashionista, details of the outfit are sent via email newsletter, complete with links to buy each item.

The downside? The app is an invitation-only service, so someone on the platform has to invite you before you can get on board.

The Netbook

The Netbook is a little bit similar to LIKEtoKNOW. It is also an invitation only platform but more exclusive.

The App is mostly used by fashion influencers. The fun element comes from being able to seek out favorite celebrities, stylists, fashion editors and sneak a peek at what they’re liking and buying right now.

Snap Fashion

Snap Fashion App allows users to snap a picture of something they like and search for similar products from over 300, 000 items available on the UK high-street and online.  It is available on mobile phones or on the web where users can paste a link to an image of the item they are after.

The Hunt

This is an interesting app that engages users. The Hunt fashion app gives users the chance to crowdsource information about the item they’re after.

Snap and upload the picture of the piece you’re after and The Hunt community will endeavor to track down that item.

There are brownie points for helping others in return.

Instagram Stories – Mark Zuckerberg Explains New Update For Instagram

Written by HF Magazine Staff  |

Instagram Stories

Instagram has added a new feature – Instagram Stories, in an update that is already available to users. The founder the Photo and video sharing App, Mark Zuckerberg explained the update earlier today via his official Instagram page.

[Instagram Boosts Video Length To One Minute]

Mr. Zuckerberg wrote;

“We’re Launching Instagram Stories today. Stories let you share a series of videos or photos — and have them disappear after 24 hours. You’ll see stories from the people you follow at the top of your feed, and a ring around their profile picture tells you when their story has been updated.

This is the latest step in putting video at the center of all our services. People are already creating and sharing more videos so we’re going to make it even easier.

If you want to see an example of what an Instagram story looks like, update your Instagram app and follow @serenawilliams. I’ll also be posting one today. I’m @zuck. Let us know what you think!”

Instagram Stories is a new feature that lives at the top of your newsfeed and allows users to pop in a stream of photos and videos that expire after 24 hours, just like Snapchat.

Reviews so far are claiming Instagram Stories is a copy of the entire concept of Snapchat. Everything from the way they are created, to how you browse through is clearly influenced by Snapchat.

Instagram’s Stories feature takes what Snapchat built and out-innovated them with their own spin on the storytelling interface.

Another edge Instagram Stories seems to have over Snapchat is the latter’s slightly confusing and complex user interface. The older generation may find it daunting to use while generations of millennials gleefully enjoy it without needing to be taught.

Instagram cashed in on this and did what it’s always done best: Made it useful to the masses, with a number of improvements that makes it far more enjoyable to use.

Instead of swiping up on a Snapchat photo to send a quick reply, Instagram has an explicit ‘Send Message’ button that helps guide the way – all of these simple things add up to an experience that’s far more enjoyable.

There are hints throughout the interface of both how to use it, and the simplicity that the developers have designed for it.

To avoid confusion, Instagram Stories focuses on labeled buttons instead of swipes and offers information on where you are exactly in the app right now.

There’s always a context for what you’re looking at and where to go next, something that’s absent in Snapchat.

According to information on the mobile App, the new Instagram Stories feature will be rolled out to all users over the next couple of weeks.

Instagram still doesn’t have lenses, which is an edge Snapchat has over it (for now), however, Instagram may likely add that, if it really wants to make Snapchat obsolete for good.

7 Things You Need To Know About The iPhone 7

Written by HF Magazine Staff  |

iPhone 7

Not much is known about the next line of device by Apple which is the iPhone 7 and actually, we’ve snooped around so much that we actually have an idea of what it’s going to look like, credits to a patent that was filed by Apple last week.

Screen

First and foremost, the suggested wrap around screen of the iPhone 7 will require some getting used to for people who are used to the previous models’ nice, clean cut screens. The product description says it will have “transparent housing” – which means, the entire phone will be some sort of synthetic glass.

Home Button

If the iPhone 7 will be coming with a glass surface, that may also mean that it won’t be having the all-time home button. So, instead of the hard button you get to press back home, it will be equipped with a fully-responsive touch screen with a home button that sits at the bottom of it – get it?

Colour

For colour options, we can tell that users will have to choose from Silver, Gold and Rose Gold. The usual Space grey may be replaced with a Deep Blue version in the coming phone model.

Headphone

A leak in information suggests that Apple’s headphone jack will not go extinct, as the iPhone 7 will come with the usual Apple earbuds.

Storage

Everybody loves a fat gigabyte of space on their phone. The iPhone 7 is rumoured to have a 256GB storage version, meaning it’ll take you even longer to get to the stage where you have to start deleting a backlog of photos and videos from your device.

Sim Slot

The dual Sim option is probably one of the major advantage that Samsung and other competitors have over the iPhone. Hence, our research suggests that the iPhone 7 would be coming with a dual SIM card slot, just like most android phones.

Don’t Believe The Hype!

On a final note, you cannot take us up on all of the above, because nothing is guaranteed until Apple officially unveils the iPhone 7. That’s all folks!

Nissan Developing World’s First E-Bio Powered Car

Written by HF Magazine Staff  |

Nissan

Recent new making rounds say, automobile manufacturers, Nissan, is currently exploring and developing e-bio – Solid Oxide Fuel-Cell (SOFC) powered vehicle systems. The first of its kind in the world.

The SOFC powered system will be programmed to run on bio-ethanol electric power, and features an e-Bio Fuel-Cell with a power generator.

This initiative is a first for automotive use and is a fuel cell utilizing the reaction of multiple fuels, including ethanol and natural gas, with oxygen to produce electricity with high efficiency. The e-Bio Fuel Cell generates electricity through the SOFC (power generator) using bio-ethanol stored in the car.

The e-Bio Fuel-Cell uses hydrogen transformed from fuel via a reformer and atmospheric oxygen, with the subsequent electrochemical reaction producing electricity to power the car. It is different to conventional systems, in that, it features SOFC as its power source, affording greater power efficiency to give the car moving ranges of over 600km, which are similar to existing petrol based cars.

According to Nissan, the e-Bio Fuel-Cell car also has distinct electric drive features including silent drive, linear start-up and brisk acceleration.

Fuel-cell systems such as Nissan’s e-Bio Fuel-Cell use chemicals that react with oxygen, generating power without the release of harmful spin-offs, with bio-ethanol fuels including those obtained from sugarcane and corn widely available in countries throughout North and South America, Asia and Africa.

How e-bio fuel cell systems work

How e-bio fuel cell systems work

The first set of Nissan’s SOFC cars, will most likely be delayed from Nissan’s initial plan of 2017, however the company said it hopes to commence swift sales from 2020.
