The 10 Highest-Grossing Movies Of 2016

The 10 Highest Grossing Movies Of 2016

The movie industry had another banner year as it took in over $11.1 billion in global ticket sales, surpassing last year’s record figure. Some reasons for that included Marvel, a guy in red tights, and animated movies.

Disney was the biggest contributor to the record-breaking year, taking in over $7 billion at the worldwide box office thanks to titles like “Captain America: Civil War,” “Finding Dory,” and “Zootopia,” which all earned over $1 billion in worldwide earnings.

Five of the top 10 worldwide box-office earners of 2016 are Disney titles (domestically it gets six out of the top 10).  Outside of the house that Walt built, 20th Century Fox’s “Dead Pool” was the biggest shock, taking in huge coin. And though they had lousy reviews, Warner Bros.’ DC Comics movies “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad” still took in impressive figures.

Below are The 10 Highest-Grossing Movies Of 2016

  1. “Captain America: Civil War” — $1.153 billion
  2. “Finding Dory” — $1.027 billion
  3. “Zootopia” — $1.023 billion
  4. “The Jungle Book” — $966.5 million
  5. “The Secret Life of Pets” — $875.4 million
  6. “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” — $873.2 million
  7. “Deadpool” — $783.1 million
  8. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” — $746.1 million

Honourable – A Review Of The Short Film By James Abinibi

Written by HF Magazine Staff  |

Honourable

The movie Honourable, from the stables of Abinibi Creative Academy, premiered on Monday, October 31 at Freedom Park in Lagos.

Honourable is a 30 minutes film, starring Yomi Fash-Lanso, Eric Didie, and Adejumoke Aderounmu. It was written, produced and directed by James Abinibi.

The movie highlights the issue of corruption and unemployment from an encounter between an unemployed citizen and a nonchalant politician.

The premiere was meant to begin at 6 pm but in the usual Nigerian custom, didn’t start until 8.55 pm.

From the title of the movie and from the trailer, one would have assumed that the movie would be a satire of the political system of Nigeria, exposing the atrocities that go on behind closed doors; most of the activities that the average citizen isn’t aware of: sort of a George Orwell’s Animal Farm kind of thing – rather the movie only exposed the promiscuity of politicians, which is only one of their many vices.

Honourable is a plot about a young university undergraduate, who had an affair with a politician – Honourable Tunji Adams (played by Yomi Fash-Lanso). The honourable was later set up to be blackmailed by the lady with the help of an accomplice.

The short film is made up of a 5 man cast and I can say that all the actors played out their roles very well. The storyline and its interpretation are original and genuine – no over-hyped acting, so kudos to the director for this.

honourable

I like the fact that the movie went straight to the point and the message was clear and easy to understand.

After the opening, we are taken to the scene where the Honourable and his undergraduate lover were accosted in their hotel room by the blackmailer. The scene went on and on and viewers began to wonder why that particular scene was taking too long. It took a while to realize that the single scene projected all the messages of the movie from start to finish.

honourable

Save for the fact that the producer wanted to pass a message through the long hotel room scene, the following observations could be made from that long scene:

The Honourable was a bit too accommodating. As a man of power, he should have devised a means of dismissing the intruder, rather than having long conversations with him.

At a time the blackmailer appeared too calm. For someone who held the aces at that moment, he should have ceased the opportunity to milk the politician for as much as he could and then clear out immediately.

The blackmailer’s main aim was to get his own share of the “stolen money”, but after a lengthy conversation with the Honourable, he finally had an epiphany and changed his mind.

For a short movie, restricting about 90% of it to an entire scene kind of removed the exciting factor from it. We would have preferred to see many short flicks instead of drowned scene.

Altogether, the movie was interesting and watchable and we applaud Mr. Abinibi for a job well done. Yes, Honourable was well done and we hope to see more movies from Abinibi Creative Studios, perhaps, a full movie.

Omoni Oboli And Jude Idada At War Over Okafor’s Law

okafor's law

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli has been called out by Jude Idada, a Canada-based scriptwriter for using his script without fulfilling her part of their contract obligation.

Omoni, who successfully produced a new movie titled, Okafor’s Law to be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) may also be ready for drama as Jude is saying she has no rights to releasing the film without paying and acknowledging him for his work.

as

According to Idada, Omoni approached him with the story idea, which he developed to a 50-scene movie. Both parties agreed on a fee of N750, 000 (Seven hundred and Fifty thousand Naira) before they proceeded to sign a contract to bind the deal.

Jude said the Omoni didn’t act upon their agreement – giving him the impression that she changed her mind about making the movie.

The award-winning writer would later hear that the movie has been finalised and about to be screened at TIFF.

When Jude eventually saw the trailer for the movie, he realised that it was his movie. Omoni had used the said script, only changing names of the characters.

According to Idada, he was going to let go but changed his mind when he learnt the Omoni and her husband were telling people that he stole their story.

In a chat with True Nollywood Stories, Jude Idada said, “In the contract I sent to them, (Omoni and her husband) I said, Okafor’s Law is yours, but the story is mine, the characters, the log line is mine, everything is mine. If at the end of the day, you don’t want to go ahead with the script, I will take everything and give you “Okafor’s Law,” because that’s all you have contributed.”

After the movie was selected for Toronto International Film Festival,  Idada wanted to sue, but changed his mind, considering how it would make Nollywood look to the world.

A star-studded movie, “Okafor’s Law” stars Richard Mofe Damijo, Toyin Aimakhu, Blossom Chukwujekwu,  Ufuoma McDermott, Kemi Lala Akindoju, Yvonne Jegede, Halima Abubakar, Mary Lazarus, Uche Nnaji, Betty Irabor, Tina Mba and Gabriel Afolayan.

Jude Idada is a winner of  AMAA best screenplay award, ANAA prize for Drama, Goethe Institut AfrikaProjekt and the first runner up of the NLNG Nigeria Prize for Literature.

Omoni is currently in Canada for the Toronto International Film Festival. Hopefully, they’ll resolve their differences before she returns to Nigeria.

Sausage Party Movie Out: Watch the Hilarious Comedy Trailer

Written by HF Magazine Staff  |

sausage party

Sausage Party is a 2016 American computer-animated comedy directed by Conrad Vernon.

The movie is an R-rated animated film about a group of food items who engage in the type of language and sexual that can be termed NSFW. The main character, a hotdog sausage tries to discover the truth about his existence and goes on a journey with his friends to escape their fate.

As it can be clearly seen, the movie has underlying messages and is a creative way of using food objects to depict sexuality, but with a twist. The film seems a little bit profane and offensive at first sight, but these are immediately forgotten, as they are covered up with comedy.

The film was theatrically released in the United States on August 12, 2016, by Columbia pictures and received positive reviews from critics and has grossed $46 million on a $19 million budget.

On website Rotten tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 82%, based on 118 reviews, with an average rating of 6.8/10. The site’s critical consensus reads, “Sausage Party is definitely offensive, but backs up its enthusiastic profanity with an impressively high gag-to-laugh ratio – and a surprisingly thought-provoking storyline.
